What Does “The Riches of His Glorious Inheritance” Mean? (Understanding Ephesians 1:18)

Today’s Gold Nugget: INHERITANCE
“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the
hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints”
– Ephesians 1:18
What does “the riches of His glorious inheritance” mean?
Paul is praying that as believers, we would grasp how incredibly valuable we are to God.
- “His inheritance” means the people God redeemed. Throughout the Old Testament, Israel is called God’s inheritance Deuteronomy 32:9. In the New Testament, all believers become God’s treasured possession through Christ.
- “Riches” means abundance, unlimited wealth.
- “Glory” refers to God’s magnificent splendor, worth, and beauty.
So, Paul is saying:
“I pray that you would truly understand how glorious, precious, and valuable you are to God—that you are His treasured possession.”
Another beautiful truth
“In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to
the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will”
– Ephesians 1:11
Paul also says we have obtained an inheritance in Christ. So, Scripture teaches both truths:
- We receive an inheritance from God—eternal life, His kingdom, His presence, every spiritual blessing.
- God considers us His inheritance—His treasured possession, redeemed by Christ.
It’s a wonderful picture of a loving Father who delights in His children.
Why does Paul pray for this?
Paul isn’t praying for more information. He’s praying that we as believers would experience this truth deep in our hearts.
When you know:
- God chose you.
- Christ redeemed you.
- The Holy Spirit sealed you.
- God treasures you as His inheritance.
This changes your identity. You stop living as someone trying to earn God’s acceptance and begin living as someone already deeply loved and valued.
Many Bible teachers summarize Ephesians 1:18 this way:
“Ask God to open your spiritual eyes so you can see how precious you are to Him and how incredible the future He has prepared for you truly is.”
It’s one of the most encouraging prayers in Scripture. It reminds us that God’s Agape Love isn’t uncertain; He absolutely and without question delights in those who belong to Him.
Today’s Reflection
Take a moment today to pray Ephesians 1:18 over your own life:
“Lord, open the eyes of my heart so I can truly understand how precious I am to You. Help me to live each day from the security of being Your treasured possession, not striving to earn Your love, but resting in it. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
